The game requires players to be connected to the internet to play, even for those choosing to play Outriders solo. In and of itself, that’s not necessarily a popular decision, but the servers have been preventing many from hopping into the game in recent days. Notably, People Can Fly and Square Enix deserve commendation for how quickly it reacted to the issues and how hard it has worked in the past couple of days to improve, alleviate, and attempt to eliminate these issues. That hasn’t stopped many from voicing their concerns over the servers, though.

On Metacritic, users have to wait something like 36 hours before they can post reviews of the game. Unfortunately, as that time comes to an end and many are not posting, they are skewing heavily negative. There doesn’t seem to be enough sheer volume to say the game is being review-bombed, but the impact of the scores are undeniable. What’s worse, many publications do not have reviews or review scores posted themselves for a likely variety of reasons, so hopping onto metacritic really only shows these reviews*.
Notably, practically every negative review so far has brought up Outriders’ servers. What follows are review scores as of this writing.
Metacritic PC: 5. 5. 28 negative, 2 mixed, 24 positive Metacritic PS4: 2. 9. 33 negative, 0 mixed, 0 positive. Metacritic PS5: 6. 0. 14 negative, 2 mixed, 17 positive. *Two publications have posted reviews for 80 and 85, respectively. Not enough have been posted to aggregate a Metacritic score yet. Metacritic Stadia: 2. 5. 6 negative, 0 mixed, 0 positive. Metacritic Xbox One: 4. 7. 11 negative, 0 mixed, 6 positive. Metacritic Xbox Series X: 6. 1. 12 negative, 3 mixed, 14 positive.
What’s important to reminder is that this is likely to change. Not only will People Can Fly stabilize the servers at some point, but many may be holding back their own reviews until they beat the game. Given the extensive endgame Expeditions Outriders promises and the solid campaign length, it seems unlikely many of these complaints have completed the game yet. Indeed, this seems to be many voicing their discontent with the server status and not the game itself.
Finally, it’s worth reiterating that People Can Fly have issued multiple updates regarding its server status since day one. It’s well-aware of the issue, and People Can Fly is obviously doing its best to bring Outriders’ servers up to fan expectation.
Outriders is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
