That title is Dynamic Voltage Games’ new game, Orphan of the Machine, a Metroid-inspired action-adventure title that will allegedly launch “holiday 2020.” The game supposedly follows a Dolphin as it rids the ocean of evil robots, clearly standing as one of the more conceptually interesting releases to be making its way to next-generation hardware.

Players shouldn’t expect the game to be on the same technical level of titles like Halo Infinite or Godfall, however, with the project being worked on by one single developer. Yet, what the game lacks in blockbuster spectacle, it seemingly will make up for in strong retro-inspired gameplay and a fun atmosphere. The game’s creator took to Twitter to voice what influenced the title, claiming “Orphan of the Machine was inspired by many games - a huge inspiration was Metroid. You’re going to have a jellyfish floating through space?! Fine, I’m going to have you fighting robots underwater.” Clearly, they’re a big fan of the classic Metroid titles, and a game that utilizes the same internal logic as those releases will no doubt be a massive success.
Alongside the announcement that the game would be coming this holiday, the developer behind the title has released a short gameplay video on YouTube, showing how Orphan of the Machine plays. The footage displays the player dolphin swimming across a 2D environment where they come across a number of clams containing useful items and abilities. This includes a dash which, much like other Metroid-inspired games, will seemingly allow the player to access new areas of the map.
Although the Series X launches later this year and has already garnered a significant amount of excitement from faithful Xbox fans, it seems the console might not have as many launch titles as early-adopters might like. Phil Spencer claimed that the Series X will actually be slightly lacking in terms of instant launch lineup, revealing that the company is looking to pace out a strong release schedule rather than dropping all its big titles at launch. Hopefully, games like Orphan of the Machine can look to pad out the Series X’s early library with a solid handful of creative indie gems.
Orphan of the Machine will be available on Xbox Series X this holiday.
